Community acupuncture is the practice of treating patients together in one room. This differs from a traditional acupuncture appointment where treatment is administered in a private room setting. Adopting this approach makes getting treatment more accessible and affordable.

Plus, treating patients in a community setting has many benefits––it’s easy for friends and family members to come in for treatment together; many patients find it comforting; and a collective energetic field becomes established which can actually make individual treatments more powerful.

I will be holding a clinic in That Purple Place, William Street, Holyhead every Tuesday morning (starting on the 9th of May - I am very excited to get started!). I will be volunteering my time and the venue and materials have been supplied by That Purple Place who have been working hard to gain funding for the community of Holyhead. Acupuncture can benefit so many people and it's very important to us to make treatment available to everyone, so the clinic is run on donations, with a suggested donation of £10 per treatment. Any money taken will 100% be put straight back into the community via the work done at That Purple Place.

How Community Acupuncture Works

Because I am treating you in a room alongside other people, you will be treated while seated or lying in a recliner. You will remain fully clothed and I will only insert needles in places I can easily access––your arms, hands, lower legs, feet and head, therefore, please wear clothes that give easy access to these areas. Because of this there are some symptoms that are difficult to treat in a community setting – for example, if you suffer with back pain there are some points I can use to help, but I won’t be able to access the back of your body, which means treatment won’t be as effective as it would in a private setting.

There will be music softly playing, making a relaxing, soothing environment. However, you might want to bring ear buds and/or an eye mask to give the feeling of extra privacy (it’s not uncommon for people to fall asleep during treatment, so be aware that there may also be background snoring!).

Once the needles are in, you can relax for up to 30 minutes and I won’t disturb you while you rest. If you are ready to go before I take your needles out, Just give me a wave and I’ll remove the needles before you leave.

What will I feel like after acupuncture?

After your sessions, you are advised to rest, relax and rehydrate throughout the day to allow your body to rebalance and heal.

People will tend towards feeling slightly fatigued after their first couple of acupuncture sessions. This is because we have asked the body to do lots of healing, so it is making you feel tired to give you the sign that it needs the space and energy to do as we have asked.

So resting, drinking lots of water and eating healthy and easy to digest foods will help your body heal. The more you can rest after your sessions, the better it is for the outcome of the treatment.

Our Guide to Getting Treatment in a Community Setting

There are a few things we ask that you keep in mind when receiving treatment to help us create a calm, relaxing and healing environment.

  • Keep talking to a minimum. To help us maintain a reservoir of calm in the treatment room, we ask that people hold off on conversations with others until you have exited the treatment room.

  • Be flexible and understanding. Because we are a community, working together, we ask that everyone have a little flexibility so we can create an environment that welcomes all.

  • What should I bring? The chairs will have a head rest but you might want to bring a favourite pillow or blanket from home if this will help you feel comfortable. And, as previously mentioned, you might want to bring ear buds and an eye mask.

  • Be respectful of our time. We promise you we’ll always deliver the highest quality care possible, but we may not always be able to have lengthy conversations with you about your health history, or how acupuncture works, or what your pulses indicate, or what every point does. It’s fantastic that you’re interested and if we’re unable to answer all your questions, we can point you in the direction of some websites that will be helpful.
